Women Without Men //Shirin Neshat
WARNING: EXTREME BIAS. In the past few weeks I have been documenting my love for Shirin Neshat and her work and today is the lastest installment of that. I mentioned Women Without Men, a film directed by Shirin before here but today, I wanted to show you why I think this film is one of the most beautiful things I’ve seen in a while.
In Neshat’s interpretation of Shahrnush Parsipur’s book, every frame is beautifully composed and the storytelling is deliberately slow, giving the viewer enough time to absorb everything in each scene. I think Neshat is a master of composition and her keen photographic eye is evident in these photos.
I have presented these images, without context, firstly because I don’t want to spoil the film for you and secondly, because I don’t think context is necessary to appreciate the beauty of the photos. I had the hardest time picking stills to publish here because I almost took photos of every frame.
You can find Women without Men on Amazon Instant Video. If you’re a Prime Member it’s free to watch or you can rent it for $2.99
Summer // Shirin Neshat
Summer
Shirin Neshat has been declared the Tribes & Things Artist of the Month. This was an idea I toyed with at the early part of this year to try to diversify my content and share more of what I love with you all but I didn’t give it any further thought. Now I’m bringing back the idea (maybe I’m just looking for any excuse to legitimize my infatuation with Shirin and my wanting to post about her everyday lol). The more I learn about Shirin, the more I fall in love with her work and I’m so excited to share everything else I know with you.
Artistic Goddess: Shirin Neshat
New York based artist Shirin Neshat’s work is undeniably as beautiful and unique as she is. Some of her best work showcases her use of photography and calligraphy to create beautiful, haunting, images.
Hear Shirin talk about her life and work in this video.
The film Women Without Men, a film based on the novel by Iranian writer Shahrnush Parsipur, is also another production of Shirin’s and highlights the versatility of this artist to express herself through different media.
Accroding to SCENEinny, for her latest project Shirin is studying Egyptian history, with a focus in vintage Egyptian hair and makeup, perhaps that explains the beautiful eyeliner makeup she is often seen wearing.
