Ainu Beauty

The idea of beauty, and how it’s definition changes from one culture to another, is always fascinating to me. The Ainu of Japan, for example, consider beards and mustaches to be a sign of beauty. So much so, that married women have tattoos around their lips to mimic a beard.

It makes me think about how relative the idea of beauty is and perhaps how irrelevant it is.

How important is the idea of beauty to you?

While Ainu tattoos or elongated neck rings might seem strange to us, wearing blush on our cheeks or painting our nails might seem just as strange to someone else.
